[Amira 3D, Avizo 3D]
Context
This article describes how to install Amira 3D or Avizo 3D on a Linux workstation.
Prerequisites
The currently supported Linux distributions are indicated in our system requirements: https://www.thermofisher.com/uk/en/home/electron-microscopy/products/software-em-3d-vis/3d-visualization-analysis-software/system-requirements.html. We recommend confirming that you are installing the software on a supported distribution before proceeding.
Should you be interested in installing the software on an unsupported platform, do understand that we cannot provide support for issues encountered related to this.
You can check your Linux distribution with the command: cat /etc/*release.
Process
1. Download the latest version of the software from https://www.thermofisher.com/software-em-3d-vis/customerportal/download-center/amira-avizo-3d-installers/.
2. Open a terminal to the folder where you have downloaded the file.
3. Add execution rights to the file by entering chmod a+x ./AmiraAvizo3D-XXX-Linux64-gcc9.bin in the command line (with XXX being replaced by the version you are installing).
4. Enter sudo./AmiraAvizo3D-XXX-Linux64-gcc9.bin in the command line.
This step requires superuser privilege (equivalent to Administrator permissions on Windows).
If you do not have these, you will have to contact whoever set up the workstation in the first place.
5. A new window pops up. Click Next.
6. The End-User License Agreement pops up. Click Next, then Yes if you agree to the terms.
7. An information panel pops up. Click Next.
8. The Select Destination Location panel pops up:
8.1. Leave the default installation path or change it to your preferred destination.
8.2. Click on OK.
9. The "Select Components panel pops up, you can leave the default settings here and click OK.
Enable the Developer files if you plan on using the C++ programming / XPand features.
10. Wait for the installation to be completed.
11. Click Finish to finalize the installation.
12. You can now launch the software with the following command:
/usr/local/AmiraAvizo3D/XXX/bin/Amira3D
or /usr/local/AmiraAvizo3D/XXX/bin/Avizo3D.
Adapt the path if you have not used the default path.
13. At this point, you will most likely have an error regarding a missing license since the product has not been activated yet.
