Context
The comprehensive guide for "FlexNet Server - Manually Install Lmadmin on Windows as an Alternative to LMs Installation" is divided into three sequential articles.
This first installment (1/3) covers the system requirements and the installation of lmadmin as the license server manager.
Prerequisites
1. Supported Windows Platforms
The supported Windows platforms for installing a FlexNet license server and using the Thermo Scientific FlexNet tools for license administration are:
- Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2025. It is considered best practice to run license servers on a server-based operating system.
- Thermo Fisher tested on Windows 11 (64-bit).
For more information, refer to the FlexNet Release Notes - section "System Requirements for lmadmin."
2. Supported Web Browser for Lmadmin
lmadmin has been tested on Microsoft Edge.
3. Additional System Requirements for Lmadmin
To use lmadmin on Windows, the relevant Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package must be installed. This package can be installed during the lmadmin installation process.
The lmadmin installer requires JRE or OpenJDK 1.7 or later. If neither is installed, you must install one separately, as the lmadmin installer does not include a JRE. Download links are available on the Java and OpenJDK websites.
Caution: Do not run 32-bit and 64-bit versions of lmadmin on the same system. When upgrading from a 32-bit to a 64-bit lmadmin, you must first stop and uninstall the 32-bit version.
Process
1. Download the License Server Installer
To use Thermo Scientific software, FlexNet tools version 11.19 or higher must be installed.
Download the latest version here: FlexNet tools 11.19.8 for Windows 64-bit.
2. Install lmadmin as the License Server Manager
Notes:
- Administrator rights are required to install lmadmin.
- Installing lmadmin will temporarily stop the existing FlexNet Publisher service if it is running.
2.1 Navigate to the directory where you extracted the FlexNet server tools archive and run the lmadmin installer:
flexnet-asglmd_mcslmd-server_11.19.8_windows-x64-msvc15/FlexNetLmadminInstaller/lmadmin-x64_n6-11_19_8_0.exe
2.2 The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\FlexNet Publisher 64-bit License Server Manager. You may choose a different directory, but ensure you have write permissions.
2.3 You can import settings from a previously installed server and Vendor Daemon. You can also review your settings before proceeding with the installation.
2.4 Select the option to install the Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable Package and agree to its license terms and conditions to continue.
2.5 If you receive a message indicating that a newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is already installed, you may safely ignore it and proceed.
2.6 Set the IP port number for the lmadmin web interface and the license server. Adjust any other FlexNet Publisher® web interface settings as needed. If unsure, retain the default values and record them before changing anything.
2.7 Continue to the Service Configuration page and select Run as a service. Complete the remaining installation steps using default values.
2.8 To verify that the server has started:
- Open Windows Task Manager and navigate to the Services tab. Confirm that lmadmin64 is running. If it is stopped, start the service manually.
- Open http://localhost:8090/ in a web browser (if you used the default port number; otherwise, use the port number you configured).
The license server dashboard should appear.
