Context
The complete process for "FlexNet Server: Manually Install lmadmin on Windows as an Alternative to Thermo Scientific License Manager " is described in three articles.
This first article (1/3) covers the system requirements and the installation of lmadmin as the license server manager.
Prerequisites
1. Supported Windows Platforms
The supported Windows platforms to install a FlexNet license server and use the Thermo Scientific FlexNet tools for license administration are:
- Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2025. It is best practice to run license servers on a server-based OS.
- Thermo Fisher tested on Windows 11 (64-bit).
For more information, refer to the FlexNet Release notes - section System Requirements for lmadmin.
2. Supported Browsers for lmadmin
lmadmin is tested on the following web browsers:
- Microsoft Edge.
- Red Hat Linux—Mozilla Firefox 131.x, Google Chrome 131.x
3. Additional System Requirements for lmadmin
To use lmadmin on Windows, the relevant Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package must be installed. This package can be installed during the lmadmin installation process.
The lmadmin installer requires JRE or OpenJDK 1.7 or later to be installed. If JRE/OpenJDK is not already installed, it must be installed separately, as it is not bundled with the lmadmin installer. Respective download links can be found on the Java and OpenJDK download pages.
Warning: Do not run 32-bit and 64-bit lmadmin on the same system. If upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit lmadmin, you must stop and uninstall the 32-bit version first.
Process
1. Download the license server installer
To use Thermo Scientific software, you must have FlexNet tools version 11.19 or higher installed on your system.
You can download the latest version via the following link: FlexNet tools 11.19.8 for Windows 64-bit.
2. Install lmadmin as the license server manager
Notes: Administrator rights are required to install lmadmin. Installing lmadmin will temporarily stop the current FlexNet Publisher service if it is already running.
2.1 Navigate to the directory where you extracted the FlexNet server tools archive and run the lmadmin installer:
flexnet-asglmd_mcslmd-server_11.19.8_windows-x64-msvc15/FlexNetLmadminInstaller/lmadmin-x64_n6-11_19_8_0.exe
2.2 The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\FlexNet Publisher 64-bit License Server Manager. You can modify it, but ensure you have write permissions.
2.3 You can import settings from a previously installed server and Vendor Daemon. You can also check your settings before proceeding with the installation.
2.4 Select the option to install the Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable Package and agree to its license terms and conditions to proceed.
2.5 If it is already installed on your system, you may see an error message indicating that a newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable has been detected. You can ignore this error message and continue to the next step.
2.6 Set the IP port number for the lmadmin web interface and the license server. Adjust other settings of the FlexNet Publisher® web user interface as needed. If unsure, keep default values and note them before making changes.
2.7 Continue until the Service Configuration page, where you must check the box Run as a service. Perform all remaining steps with default values.
2.8 Verify that the server has started:
- Open Windows Task Manager and look for the service lmadmin64 in the Services tab. If the service is stopped, start it.
- Open http://localhost:8090/ in a web browser (if you used the default port number; otherwise, use the port number you set).
The dashboard of the license server should be displayed.
