Context & Prerequisites
- Note that administrator rights are required to install a FlexNet license server.
- First, determine which computer will host the FlexNet license server.
This system must be accessible over the network from any computer that may request a license. It should also be highly reliable.
- The license server can be installed on the same computer where Thermo Scientific™ software is installed, but this is not required.
FlexNet licensing supports heterogeneous environments, meaning the server and Thermo Scientific software can run on different operating systems. For instance, the FlexNet server can run on a Windows platform, while Thermo Scientific software runs on Linux.
- If your site already operates a FlexNet license server running for other vendors’ products, this may influence how you configure the Thermo Scientific license server.
For more information, refer to FlexNet Publisher – License Administration Guide - section "Managing Licenses from Multiple Software Publishers".
There are two versions of the license server manager:
1. lmadmin
The web-based license server manager (also referred to as lmadmin or FlexNet Publisher® web user interface).
lmadmin provides improved methods for managing the license server and vendor daemons. This is the only version documented in this guide. For technical details, refer to FlexNet Publisher – License Administration Guide - section "License Server Manager “lmadmin“.
2. lmgrd
The original license server manager with a command-line interface.
While you can use lmgrd to manage your FlexNet license server, it relies on older technology and may be deprecated.
For more information about lmgrd/lmadmin tools, please refer to FlexNet Publisher - License Administration Guide - section "Migrating from lmgrd to lmadmin".
To simplify license server installation and administration, Thermo Fisher provides the Thermo Scientific License Manager for Server (SLM) tool. The SLM guides you through the installation and configuration of lmadmin and is currently supported only on Windows platforms. On Linux, lmadmin must be installed manually; for more details, refer to article KA-01300 "Manage Floating Licenses: Linux - Manual Installation of lmadmin as license Server Manager".
