Context

The Thermo Scientific ™ product license you have acquired defines your rights to use Thermo Scientific applications and their modules (extensions) with a specific level of functionality. It applies to a specific version of the software and is restricted to use on designated equipment for a specific number of simultaneous users. In some cases, the license may also be limited to a specific period of time or time-limited to particular use cases.

Your product license is protected by a license key. Each time the application is launched, it checks for a valid license key. If a valid license key is found, the application runs. If no valid key is detected, you will be prompted to obtain one.

Thermo Scientific products use separate license keys for all editions and extensions.

Description

1. Local (Node-Locked) Versus Floating Licenses

There are two main types of licenses:

  • Local licenses, also called node-locked licenses, allow the software to run exclusively on a single, designated computer.
For detailed instructions, refer to article KA-01353 "Manage Local Licenses: Main Action Overview and Links."
  • Floating licenses allow one or more concurrent users to run the software simultaneously from computers on your local network. The number of concurrent users corresponds to the number of license tokens purchased.

To use floating licenses, you must install FlexNet Publisher License Server Manager on a local server. Each end user’s computer must then be configured to specify the location of this local server.
If you have purchased floating licenses, you should have received an email from flex1647@flexnetoperations.com containing instructions for setting up the license server and activating the product on the end user’s computer.
For detailed instructions, refer to article KA-01274 "Manage Floating Licenses and FlexNet License Server - Overview."

2. Time-Limited Versus Perpetual Licenses

In addition, licenses can be:

  • Time-limited: valid until a specified date. This date is displayed on the product splash screen when the software starts, or in the About dialog box (accessible from the Help › About menu). After the expiration date, the Thermo Scientific software will no longer run. This type of license is typically used for trial, beta, or renewable rented licenses, such as yearly subscriptions.
  • Perpetual: a type of license that allows the user to run the software indefinitely after a one-time purchase, without time restrictions. Unlike time-limited licenses, they do not require recurring payments. However, a perpetual license does not include ongoing updates, upgrades, or technical support unless annual maintenance fees are paid. Renewing maintenance ensures that the software remains current and supported.
